It is mainly known for being the heart of the Mayan civilization Itzá, one of the latest to survive colon assaults. Many amazing Mayan ruins, like UNESCO World Heritage site of Tikal can be found nearby.

There are three zones of development around the lake, the first and oldest one is the small colonial island of Flores, and the towns of Santa Elena and San Benito. You can find the international airport of Flores Mundo Maya (FRS) there, as well as supermarkets, hospitals, and bus transportation to the rest of the country.

The second populated area around the lake is the tourist town of El Remate, half way from Flores to Tikal. El Remate is a laid back village, with a few good restaurants and backpackers hotels, a few of them with a small beach on the lake. People looking to relax after visiting the ruins enjoy El Remate more than Flores, which is more developed and tends to be hotter too.

Finally the third area includes the towns of San José, San Andrés and the village of San Pedro, on the North-East of the lake. San José and San Andrés each have a bank with ATM and basic shops, and San Pedro is smaller, with only basic food and necessities to be bought, a couple of churches and a football field.

San Pedro Itzá is bordering the village of San Pedro. You can reach the residence from Flores either by boat (a 25 minute lovely ride from the airport or the town, $25) or by public bus (1 1/2 hour, $1.5). Buses get there twice a day and from Flores you can catch a bus to Guatemala City in 8 hours. There is a luxury bus service by night that cost around $30.

The road to get there is the main road that goes all around the lake via San Andrés, it is asphalted except for the last 10km or 6 miles, that should be asphalted soon.

San Pedro is a quiet village, save for weekend nights when there is usually a soccer game and a bit of music. People are nice and friendly, and the village is safe.
